Walking in Ponga Natural Park is superb, and much less frequented than in the neighbouring Picos de Europa. Views of Picos de Europa skylines from within Ponga can be stunning. The natural park is an area of high mountains amidst extensive forest and green meadows, scattered with small villages and deep gorges. The following walks give a good insight into the area, and are highly recommended.
Les Bedules to Sen de los Mulos.
Sen de losMulos is a 1505m peak allowing superb views of the Picos de Europa and the Ponga area, including the undulating expanse of Peloña beech forest. The first part of the walk follows a track through meadows and woodland with fine views, to the delightful col of Viances, from where a steeper path leads to the top.
Les Bedules to Pico Zorro.
At 1844m Pico Zorro ("fox peak") commands views of the Picos deEuropa, Ponga Natural Park, Peloña beech forest, and the Cordillera Cantabrica, and is thought by some to be Ponga's best walk.
The jewel in the crown of Ponga Natural Park, this elevated rock summit (1951m) looms over the surrounding landscape, and is a fine example of the typical geomorphology of the area. The rewarding10-hour circuit from Taranes involves over 1500m of ascent (and descent!), and challenging navigation over difficult and pathlessterrain. Not one for the faint-hearted or inexperienced!
Ventaniella to Pileñes.
From the medieval inn of Ventaniella to the lofty peak of Pileñes,this is a walk through wild country in the far south of the naturalpark. Part of this walk follows one of the historic routes to theremote hermitage of Arcenorio.
A stroll though some Beyos Villages.
A hairpin road lifts you from the Beyos Gorge to the church of Casielles village, where a short stroll along farm tracks carries youabove Caviella to Biamón. Various more challenging routes connect here including the ascent of Peña Salon (1245m), the Senda delCartero ("postman's path") from Biamón to the Beyos Gorge, the descent from Caviella to the Beyos Gorge, and a difficult traverse to the village of Viboli.
