Sueve mountains - Walking in the Sueve

Walking in the Sueve is always rewarding, worth while just for the incredible views.

Add to these the limestone landforms, the Asturcon ponies, the fallow deer and other wildlife, the wildflowers, and the high pastures with their stone huts, and the Sueve rivals anything Asturias has to offer the walker. Here are two well-recommended walks.

Picu Pienzu from the Fito View point.
The classic walk of the Sueve, and one of the best in the area. The route begins at the renowned Fito Viewpoint, climbs past the old refuge, and meanders gently along the crest of the Fito Hills, with views of the Sueve on one side and the Picos de Europa on the other. The woodland on the right across the small valley is the beech forestof La Biescona. From the green pastures of Bustaco, the path climbs to more pastures on the col of Beluenzu, where Fito meets Sueve. Asteep but short ascent to the right leads to the enormous iron crossthat marks the summit of Picu Pienzu, at 1159m. Views abound. The return to the Fito Viewpoint is via the same route, (although a goodalternative is to descend from Bustaco to the villages of Bodes andCollia, the two villages being linked by an historic path through atmospheric river-side woodland). The beauty of this walk is that every step is a joy, and you can turn around at any point having had fulfilment enough.

Villamayor to Collia.
Villamayor and Collia are two villages to the south of the Sueve range, and this walk traverses the southern slopes of the range to connect the two. The route leaves the Piloña river valley and climbs half way up the Sueve, before linking through a series of cols and remote settlements with their mountain pastures. Some of the sesettlements are superbly situated, and views are stunning. Descent is by farmer's tracks to the village of Villar, and then Cofiño,before crossing the wooded valley to end in Collia, where there is abar.
